Hardware

The workstation used for the teleworking sessions was a SUN/SPARC 20 running Solaris 2.
The applications have been developed in C/C++ on a user object oriented interface toolbox, providing a high level application programming interface.
For the visiophony communication first a commercial package (SUN ShowMe) was used and in second phase a specific developed (by Thomson - CSF) terminal adapter (TA) for high quality visiophony. This adapter provides a considerable increase of video and audio (hi-fi) quality. Video is compressed by DCT and motion compensated intra-inter frame prediction with half picture accuracy to about 8 Mbits/s for "distribution" quality of 25 full coloured 720x576 images per second. Hi-fi audio data were reduced to 256 Kbits/s.
